I: Poetry by John Grey & Collage by Greg Hanson, 1

Middle Sister

I am the first to die;
the middle sister,
neither the wisest
nor the kindest
though some once said
the prettiest.

I married first,
gave birth
while the others
barely knew
the taste,
the vigor
of a man.

In fact,
younger, older,
my life showed
clean heels
to theirs.
But I was
cut down first,
so maybe that’s the lesson.

And I can’t know
how the other sisters
will endure now that
I am gone.
Will they miss me?
Will they even speak of me?

I am the first to die,
the middle sister.
I embrace the loneliness
in the three of us,
am the first to give it meaning.
